Ladies Out to Lunch
Despite the bitter cold weather we had experienced the past week,
Wednesday, January 16, 2013 broke forth bright and sunny. The sunshine
was a perfect incentive to rouse twenty Village ladies from their
lethargy and out to lunch at the Superstition Springs Golf Course.
A delicious lunch made up of Mixed Green Salad, Green Beans/Carrots, Herb
Roasted Potatoes, Panko Chicken/ Sauce, Carrot and Chocolate Cake, Coffee
and Iced Tea was served.
Thanks to our two capable coordinators, Nancy Curtis, and Donna Norton,
all enjoyed the good food and camaraderie.
Look for signs on the bulletin board for a February Ladies Out to Lunch.

MARIE BERAN
December 19th. Village Christmas party.
Marie is back with us here in the Village, in her unit # 2001, after
spending the summer in the Paradise Village Retirement place, in
National City, California, near Coronado. She had seen an ad in the
Retired Officers magazine, telling of Paradise Village, and immediately
booked reservations. She dreamed of taking guests to lunch at the Crown
Room in the Coronado Hotel, where she used to go dancing in her days gone
by. Unfortunately, her health was not up to par to do so last summer.
a Queen. They gave her a gala 100th. birthday party, complete with live
entertainment, catered food, and a huge birthday cake. Every resident in
the place sent her a birthday card. She had made friends quickly, and so
she and her friend Joy would meet early in the dining room and watch the
late comers trickle in.
I suspect she may just book a month or two at Paradise Village again next
summer.
where her father owned several Drug Stores. Her first husband gave her
flying lessons, and she became a licensed pilot. She told of how her
father loved to fly, but her Mom was scared to death of it. They owned
their own plane, and one day arrangements were made to take her folks on
a sight seeing flight. Her Dad carefully tucked her Mom in the rear
seat, and gripping the seat , she agreed to go. When the flight was
over, the mother announced, "I loved it." From then on, she was the most
excited and willing passenger.
had been married only three months. He was one of three pilots who were
inseparable friends. Years later, Marie married one of those three
pilots, Major Clayton Beran, in Berkeley, California. Major Beran
piloted a B-17, and spent two years in the jungles of Brazil, with
nothing but an almanac to give them directions. He and Marie had no
children, though she has always been close to her brother's seven
children.
Clemente, California, shopping with a niece. She was directed to step on
a disabled escalator, when a switch was accidently turned on to the
"down" position. She was knocked backwards into her niece, who fell on
top of her. Her niece was unhurt, but Marie suffered severe head and
spine bruises, which still plague her to this day.
the 75-day trip they took on a freighter. They were treated like
royalty, ate at the Captain's table, and had full run of the ship. "You
couldn't do that today," Marie stated.
while motor homing between there and Mesa. She loved driving the motor
home, and when the family coaxed her into getting rid of it and down-sizing to a car, she was not a happy camper. "First mistake I evermade," she said.
Not bad for 100 years, I'd say, wouldn't you?
Christmas. We pray he will enjoy being with this delightful lady, as
much as we have enjoyed knowing her.
